Why Howell? Why Hutchings?
When I was teaching in South Lyon a colleague of mine called me up saying there was going to be a principal opening in Howell at Hutchings Elementary. Her son went to the school and told me that the families, staff, and students at Hutchings were absolutely fantastic. I drove by the school that night to see the building and get a feel for what it would be like and applied to the position the very next day.
During my interview, which Mrs. Nelson was on and the various other members of Howell Public Schools I was asked the question, Why Howell? Why Hutchings? If I’m being honest I gave a pretty standard response about the community feel, the love for students, the proximity to my house, and the chance to build some innovative programs. However, I would like to amend my answer here today after working at Hutchings for the past five years.
Why Howell? Why Hutchings? It is a very simple answer - the people.
I’ve had the absolute pleasure getting to work with Novi Community Schools, South Lyon Community Schools, East Lansing Public Schools, and Detroit Public Schools. I learned so much in my time in these various districts but what I’ve come to absolutely treasure here in Howell is the people who make up this team and community. As we gear up for March and the end of the school year I wanted to say thank you for allowing me to be part of the Hutchings family and for trusting us with your children. I want to thank the staff here who put an insane amount of love and energy into everyday for the kids. I want to thank the kids who during these troubling times have embraced taking care of everyone, and I want to thank everyone for continuing to promote the family values of hard work, perseverance, respect, and effort.
Why Howell? Why Hutchings? - We are a pack. We are a family.
Mr. Moore
Please remember that there is no school on Monday, February 15, in honor of President’ Day. Following previous long-weekends, we have had an increase in the number of students who test positive for COVID-19 based on exposures outside of the school setting. As we head into this long weekend, please remind your students that they should be following best public health practices such as frequent hand washing, wearing a mask when in public, practicing social distancing when possible, avoiding large and indoor social gatherings, and staying home when not feeling well.
