Hutchings Herald 06/08/2018

The Principal's Corner:

Families,

The end of the year is upon us and I wanted to extend our best wishes to the 5th grade students who will be venturing off into the wonderful world of middle school. This group of young adults have truly been a pleasure to work with and I will miss our conversations about the American Revolution, why I don’t think 10 year olds need cell phones, and the daily measurements to see if they did in fact pass me in height by the end of 5th grade. The word dedication comes to my mind when I think of this grade as a whole: dedication to learning, dedication to their friends and family, and dedicated to the sports and clubs. Their dedication to being the best version of themselves will be missed here at Hutchings; however, I am confident that the 4th graders will pick up the torch and run with it. For any families that are moving this summer we also wanted to wish you the best of luck in the adventures that await you and your family.

I also wanted to let everyone know that starting next year we will also be changing our name to the Hutchings Huskies. We finally got all of the students’ votes cast during their Technology special and the Huskie name ended up being our winner. Throughout the upcoming school year, our PBIS (positive behavior) team will be implementing a series of lessons and games that focus on positive Husky traits with each month having a different trait. This information will be available on the Hutchings webpage for all to view.

Hutchings staff is excited to announce that we are also looking to hire an additional teacher for Kindergarten and for 3rd grade as our population has grown. As soon as those positions are filled I will e-mail a welcome letter introducing our new Hutchings teachers!

As we break into summer we are also excited to announce that we have several summer reading programs available for students through HPS. Our first is our Book Bus program run by Howell Public Schools! Please see the message from Mr. MacGregor below about the dates and stops for the book bus!

Mrs. Harde and our summer reading team have also put together a Pop Up Summer Reading Program! Four times this summer, your Hutchings teachers will be showing up around Howell to read to students. We will robocall (automatic phone call) families to let them know the locations around Howell! Students who join us at our summer pop-up reading will be able to choose a new free book as a gift from us to you!

Finally, we have our Super Summer Reading Challenge! Please see the flyer below. Students can print off the challenge sheet, earn their 6 badges, and return it to Hutchings in the fall to receive a small prize!

Starting up in 2018-2019 we also have a new PTO Board with Emmie Gehringer as our president, Randie Mealey as our vice-president, Jenny Jespersen as our secretary, and two of our treasure spots are filled by Anna Gibson and Hope Spaniola. I wanted to welcome them to the PTO and also thank our current PTO for all of their hardwork over the past two years.

I hope everyone has a great end of the school year and a fantastic summer break.

Mr. Moore

MacGregor's Message:

Our Annual Education Report (AER) which provides essential information on the 2016-17 educational progress of Hutchings Elementary has been posted to our website. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. This report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. To view our AER, please visit https://goo.gl/k4HZuz.

The Highlander Reading Express, the district's new literacy bus is nearing completion.  Next week our students will have an opportunity to see the bus when it makes a stop at our school. If everything goes according to plan, The Highlander Reading Express will begin running on Tuesday, June 19. To see a list of places The Highlander Reading Express will be this summer, please visit HowellSchools.com/BookBus. The district is still waiting for approval for some locations and adding some special events, so be sure to check the website often.

Counselor's Corner

Imagine what the world would look like if every child had a caring adult that listened to them, nurtured their self-esteem, and showed them the possibilities of the world.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston County is currently recruiting caring volunteers who are willing to mentor (and share lunch with) an elementary student twice a month. We currently have a long list of “littles” waiting and hoping to be matched with a “big.”

If you know of anyone (parents, friends) who could provide this opportunity for a Howell elementary student, please reach out to Alyson Mapes at [email protected] or 517-546-1140. Have a terrific summer!
